Greece, 1840 Athens, Greece to Edinburgh, Scotland. Folded letter with "Athens, 26 Feb 1840" origin cds, "Purifie Au Lazaret Malte" disinfection handstamp and red date stamp "2 Grece 2 Marseille 27 Mars 40" cds, manuscript "2/8½" due marking, various transit backstamps, disinfection slits through cover, the 2/8½ was the correct rate per French packet via Marseille through Malta 1840 - 1-Jun-1843, listed in Moubray as a secondary route, Very Fine.

Guyana, 1836-38 2 Folded Letters from Berbice, Guyana to London. Both with "Deal Ship Letter" hand-stamped in the upper right corner, and rated "1/4" (8 pence inward ship letter + 8 pence inland) due, appropriate receiving cds's on the reverse, both covers to the Mission House in London & with file fold, Very Fine.

Iceland, 1903 Cards to Danish West Indies. Two 1903 cards from the same correspondence address to St. Croix, the 1st is franked with a pair of 5a, the 2nd franked with 4a + 6a + 10a, both with proper transit & arrival markings, both on picture post card, 10a creased, Very Fine.

India, 1854 Madras, India to New York, N.Y. 1854 folded cover with dark red framed three line "Madras G.P.O. 1854 Ap 22" hand-stamped in the lower left corner with matching crescent "India Paid" and red manuscript "3/2" adjacent. Red manuscript "2/" superimposed over the previously mentioned India Paid hand-stamp, red tombstone four line "M PAID 11JU11 1854" hand-stamp upper middle, black manuscript "pr steamer" in the upper left corner, black manuscript "Paid" upper right corner, with a black circular "10" hand-stamp and black "NEW - YORK Am. Pkt. JUN 25" receiving exchange cds in the lower right corner, Very Fine, a scarce early cover to the United States.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The rate from India to G.B. (Southampton) was 1/ (8annas) (1840 - 31-Jan-1856). This was paid 3/2, as indicated, for a letter weighing between one half and one ounce, in an attempt to pay the 1/ per half ounce to G.B., and remaining 16 cents per half ounce sea postage - 1/ doubled (24c X 2 =48c) or 2/, plus 8 pence doubled (16c X 2=32c) or 1/4 for a total of 3/4 (80 cents), leaving a shortage of 2 pence. The red manuscript "2/" to represent a restatement of the rate, and should have been in black, but was taken as a credit in New York, where only 10 cents (5 cents U.S. inland X 2 = 10 cents) was collected from the addressee. Per P&O steamer "Hindostan", departing Galle 28-Apr-1854, arriving Suez 14-May-1854, overland to Alexandria, where departed per "Simla", arriving Southampton 10-Jun-1854. Departed Liverpool per Collins Line steamer "Atlantic" on 14-Jun-1854, arriving New York 25-Jun-1854.

India, 1859, Calcutta to New York, N.Y. Folded cover franked with 1855-64 ½a + 1a + 2a + 8a tied by Calcutta cancels & black "N. York Br. Pkt 5 Jun 22" (5¢ due) cds with red Calcutta double circle backstamp postmark, markings include red boxed "India Paid", oval "Forwarded By Atkinson Tilton & Co. Calcutta" handstamp, red manuscript "1/4d" credit to G.B., horizontal bend through stamps & a couple minor perf flaws, Very Fine.
Scott No. 11+12+15+18    Estimate $100 - 150.

Franked with 11½ annas (about 34 cents U.S.), which paid the correct rate to the U.S. for a quarter ounce letter via Marseilles, with 5 cents for U.S. inland collected from the addressee. Per the P&O steamer "Simla", departing Galle 14-May, arriving Suez 29-May. Per "Panther", departing Alexandria 3-Jun, arriving Marseilles 9-Jun. Cunard Line steamer "Persia", departing Liverpool 11-Jun, arriving New York 21-Jun.

India, 1863, Bombay, India to United States 1863-1864. Folded cover franked with 1855-64 ½a + 1a + 4a + 8a tied by numeral "1" & "Bombay India Paid" double circle postmark on blue cover to Cambridge, Mass., markings include red London transit & "N. York Am. Pkt. 5/ Jan 13" (5 cents due) exchange cds, Very Fine and attractive.
Scott No. 11+12+16+18    Estimate $200 - 300.

Franked with 13½ annas (about 40 cents U.S.), which paid the rate "via Marseilles" for between half and one ounce to G.B., with 5 cents collected for U.S. inland. Carried by the North German Lloyd steamer "New York", departing 23-Dec, arriving New York 12-Jan.

Franked with 1855-64 1a (horizontal pair) + 4a tied by numeral "54" & Sealkote cds on a mourning cover with red boxed "India Paid" & black boxed "Deficient Postage S D Fine___" handstamp, manuscript endorsement "Via Bombay and Marseilles" at upper left, Very Fine.

Franked with 6a (about 18¢ U.S.), which insufficiently paid the 6 annas, 8 pies rate (about 20¢ U.S.) for up to half ounce by 8 pies (about 2 cents U.S. or 1 pence).
