Hong Kong, 1879-1907 Hong Kong incoming from U.S. with due markings. 4 covers, one to Foo Chow; all bearing T (taxed) markings and manuscript notations of the amount to be collected from the addressee; 1) Washington 3c postal stationery envelope bearing additional 1c and 3c (2) adhesives with killer cancels, adjacent blue "Richmond Ind. Ja 25", and black encircled T postage due mark, "Hong Kong Mr 19 79" arrival cds on back. This is the earliest seen UPU postage due cover to Hong Kong from an international origin. 2) Envelope with 5c Garfield, "Exeter N.H. Jul 7 1887" cds, and 25T on front, on back: Boston, San Francisco, and Hong Kong transit cds, and "Foochowfoo Au 23 87" arrival cds. 3) Washington 2c postal stationery envelope from Fresno,1906, with encircled T15, 4) Washington 2c postal stationery envelope cancelled "Portland Oregon May 6 1913", with rectangular duplex slogan: "World's Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco 1915", and two-circle postage due mark with "T Seattle" in the left circle and "30 Centimes" in the right circle, Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1880-1907 Marine Sorter Covers. 1880 Malta to Tokyo and 1907 Penang to San Francisco; 1) small cover, reduced at top, bearing G.B. QV 2d blue pair, possibly underpaying the new UPU 10¢ rate, cancelled "Malta My 1 80" with duplex A25 killer, addressed to Tokio, Japan. backstamps "Singapore To Hong Kong, A, Ju 17 80" (Proud type D8: 1878-1900) & "Yokohama, July 5 1880" with star at bottom (Bishop type IV-3: 1879-82), Japanese native marking on front, no marine sorter mark recorded in Proud on this voyage by P&O Ancona from Singapore, 17 June to Hong Kong, 22 June 80, 2) cover with Straits Settlements KEVII 5¢ cancelled "Penang My 6 1907" with partial postage due T handstamp and manuscript "10" centimes due, "U.S. Charge To Collect 4 Cents", with 1¢ pair and 2¢ U.S. postage due stamps affixed, backstamps "Singapore To Hong Kong, 11 My 07" (Proud type D15: low index letter, 1900-09, value 5,000 points) & "San Francisco Cal Rec'd Jun 14 1907", marine sorting performed on P&O Oceana from Singapore, 11 May to Hong Kong, 15 May 07, Fine.

An interesting lot of 25 covers & 7 post cards all to Hong Kong or related areas, most are late 19th or early 20th century items, a variety of markings and frankings are present, noted are a few advertising covers & a couple of covers with auxiliary or maritime markings, mixed condition, worth careful inspection.

Lot of 65 covers & cards coming into or transiting Hong Kong with a wide variety of markings and usages, countries include Great Britain, India (16 covers to United States transiting Hong Kong), Macao, Switzerland, Japan, France, Indo China, etc., mixed condition, worth inspection as many interesting item are present.

Hong Kong, 1895 Hong Kong to U.S. with San Francisco direction marking. Red-band cover with QV 10c red (Scott 42) cancelled "Hong Kong 26 Nov 95", address on front entirely in Chinese, so Hong Kong PO applied red, straight-line, English-language "San Frangisco" direction marking ("G" in error for first "C") on back, although a number of different Oriental and India direction marks have been recorded, this San Francisco mark is previously unrecorded, and farthest destination from Hong Kong of any of these markings. Also on front: "San Francisco Cal Paid All 24 Dec 1895" arrival cds. San Francisco arrival date indicates letter was carried by PMSS Co. China, although 25 Nov. Hong Kong departure date listed in Proud is one day earlier than departure cds (so one or the other is in error), tissue paper surface of envelope back torn, otherwise Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1897-1910 Hong Kong Mail with "Paquebot" Marks. 2 items; 1) German 10pf red postal card cancelled "Deutsche Seepost Ost - Asiatisch Zweiglinie 16 3 97", card off-loaded at Yokohama, outward terminus of German branch line, where "Yokohama Japan 17 Mar 97" transit cds (Bishop XI-22: 1894-1905), and "Paquebot" (Hosking 3462: 1897-1906, so a very early use) marking applied. Also on front: "Hong Kong Mr 29 97" transit cds, and "Dornum (Ostfriesland) 28/4. 97" arrival cds. 2) US 2c Washington postal stationery envelope to Hong Kong, plus 6c Washington adhesive (Scott 336), tied by P.M.S.S.Co. hand-stamps, and earlier than recorded "Tenyo- Maru Sea Post 16.8.10" cds (Bishop XIII-29: 18.1.11 - 17.3.13). Also on front: "Paquebot" marking, appears to be Hosking 3464 (Yokohama - only recorded in 1909, scarcity D). On back: "General Post Office Hong Kong 12 Sp 10" (Proud type D84: 1902-11, but very seldom seen on cover, particularly as an arrival cds), Very Fine.

Hong Kong, 1900-07 Marine Sorter Covers. 1900 G.B. to China & 1907 Singapore to U.S.; 1) Great Britain QV 1d naval concession rate, cancelled "Portsmouth Oc 23 99", to an HMS vessel in China, but redirected to "Cape of Good Hope South Africa" (manuscript), datestamped "Point Natal 22 No 99", redirected to "HMS Victorious China Station", backstamped "Colombo De 20 (99)", and "Singapore To Hong Kong A Ja 1 00" (Proud type D8: 29 Sep 1878 - 28 Jan 1900), no marine sorter mark recorded in Proud on this voyage by P&O Valetta from Singapore, 31 Dec 1899 to Hong Kong, 7 Jan 1900, apparently sent in search of addressee, as indicated by "Hong Kong Ja 13" cds, but without success and returned to "Portsmouth AP 14 00", finally back out again with "Colombo My 16" & "Hong Kong My 30 00" cds, manuscript "Received June 29th 1900 8 months & 6 days out" somewhat tatty and stained due to much-traveled nature, 2) printed post card legend struck out, and "Printed Matter Only" hand-stamped, allowing 1¢ rate, Straits Settlements KEVII 1¢ cancelled "Singapore Ju _ 07", with "Singapore To Hong Kong 8 Ju 07" (Proud type D15: low index letter, 1900-09, value 5,000 points), marine sorting performed on P&O Delta from Singapore, 8 June to Hong Kong, 12 June 07, Very Fine postmarks.

Hong Kong, 1904 Tsingtao German PO to Hong Kong. Postcard franked Kiautschou 3 pfennig brown with steamer image (4), cancelled "Tsingtao Kiautschou 12 5 04", addressed to a person on "SMS Tiger" at Hong Kong, with "Victoria Hong Kong 20 My 04" arrival cds, Very Fine and choice, mail between German offices in China and Hong Kong seldom seen.

Hong Kong, 1905 Canton Incoming From Nottingham, Penn. With Dead Letter Office markings, cover bearing US 5c Lincoln (Scott 304) cancelled by "Nottingham Pa 18 Oct 1905" duplex, on back: Seattle and Victoria Hong Kong transit cds, and "Canton A No 22 5" arrival cds (single digit year, Webb type Div: only recorded 25 Sep 5 - 19 Mar 6). "Canton" address crossed out and manuscript "Deceased" added. Also on front: "Hong Kong D.L.O." (Proud type D2: 1894 - 1910, but very seldom seen), and "Victoria Hong Kong 24 No 05", without time, not so recorded by Webb or Proud. On back in red, "Dead Letter Office F.D.U.S.A Jan 8 1906", and on front in same red: pointing finger (to return address) inscribed "Return To Writer Dead Letter Office Washington, D.C." and "Washington, D.C. Jan 9 1906" cds, Fine.
