(Cancels) 3¢ Orange Brown, Types I & II, study of 15 singles canceled by the very scarce 1851 New York integral single bar cds (Simpson rarity 6) used from August 12th to the 27th, 6 off cover and 9 on cover; various dates including August 13, 15, 18, 22-24 off cover, on cover usages including August 18, 20 (x2), 22 (x2, one privately carried from San Francisco), 23 (x2), 25 & the 26th, most hand selected for well margined examples; few flaws, still Very Fine overall, a wonderful assembly and study of this very scarce experimental postmark.

(Cancels) 3¢ Orange Brown, Types I & II, study of 11 singles on cover canceled by the 1851 New York integral four-bar cds with usages from September to November of 1851; includes four usage in September (3, 12, 24 & 28th), four usages in October (1, 6, 27 & 29th) and three in November (10th x2 & 127th); all with clear readable strikes, Very Fine overall.

(Cancels) 3¢ Orange Brown, Type I, large margins to just shaving frameline at bottom, bright vibrant color, tied by bold socked-on-the-nose "New York, Aug 22" integral single bar cds on immaculate cover to Cooperstown, Extremely Fine, a gem usage of this short-lived experimental postmark.
Scott No. 10    Estimate $300 - 400.

The use of this "single bar" cancellation is known only in the latter half of August 1851 for a period of sixteen days from the 12th to the 27th. It was one of several different bar style integral cancellers used during this period in New York City.

(Dates) 3¢ Orange Brown, Type I, First Day Cover, position 45R1E, ample margins to into frameline at bottom, tied by neat red grid handstamp on folded priced current sheet to Boston, Mass., matching "Mobile, Ala., Jul 1" First Day of Issue cds, datelined and docketed July 1, 1851; cover refolded and vertical crease affecting stamp, Fine, still a lovely First Day of Issue cover of the 1851, 3¢ Orange Brown used from Mobile, ex Hulme; with 1989 A.P.S. and 1989 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 10; $12,500    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

In the 1851 Sesquicentennial book, Wilson Hulme records 43 first day usages of the 1851, 3¢ orange brown in his census. Only two verified examples are known from Mobile, Alabama.

(Dates) 3¢ Orange Brown, Types I-II, First Month of Use, 29 single franking covers, each with a different July 3rd to 31st 1851 townmark; nice range of towns including red Yonkers, N.Y., blue Syracuse, N.Y. intgral rate, blue Frederick, Md., blue Collinsville, Ct. with straight line "Paid" handstamps cancelling, Boston, Mass. with black and red small "Paid" in grid handstamp and U.S. Express Mail usages, blue Milwaukee, Wis., Detroit, Mich. with red cds and blue grid handstamp tying, etc., with at last ten four margin examples with many items plated, three covers with file folds affecting stamps, otherwise Very Fine or better.

(Usages) 3¢ Orange Brown, Type I, left margin guidline single canceled by square grid handstamp on 1851 folded Phelps, Dodge & Co. invoice, red "New - York, July 13" cds, with handstamp on inside billing "To encourage the cheap Postage system, we pre-pay all letters. P.D. & Co.", accompanied by 1852 New Haven, Con. merchant corner card cover with printed "We Always Pre-Pay" at top; stamp on former with small corner crease, otherwise Very Fine.

After penalty rate took effect on July 1, 1851, many businesses adopted a rule that all of their outgoing mail would be prepaid.

(Usages) 3¢ Orange Brown, Type I, mostly torn away from cover dateliend "August 18th, 1851" from writer working aboard ship travelling between Havana and Charges (probably aboard the contract mail steamship S.S. Falcon), to Cohoes, N.Y. entering the mails with red "New Orleans, La., Aug 22" cds, matching "Steam" handstamp and manuscript "10" rate applied over portion of stamp, interesting letter mentioning sending affects and letters home by the ships Empire City, Georgia, Ohio and Cherokee, Very Fine, an interesting usage.
